What if my child is ahead or behind in certain subjects?

My older child was reading chapter books at five but still counting on fingers at seven.

My younger one was the opposite.

For a while, I worried about both of them.

Then I realized: this is completely normal. And honestly, it's one of the best reasons to homeschool.

Kids aren't supposed to develop evenly across all subjects at the same time. That expectation is a product of the classroom model, where everyone has to move at the same pace because there are twenty-five of them.

It has nothing to do with how children actually learn.

At home, you can meet your child exactly where they are. If they're ahead somewhere, give them harder material. If they're struggling somewhere, slow down, back up, find another way in.

After five years, the gaps tend to close. Things that looked like major delays often sorted themselves out with time. And perceived advantages sometimes leveled off as kids grew.

Development is uneven. Let them be where they are.
