What counts as learning in homeschooling?

I got stuck on this one longer than I'd like to admit.
I'd watch my kids spend an entire afternoon building something out of cardboard and tape, and part of me would think, "But we didn't do any real school today."
It took me a while to unlearn that.
That project was engineering, problem-solving, planning, persistence, and negotiation. That's a lot of learning. It just didn't come with a worksheet.
Homeschooling gives you the freedom to recognize learning wherever it actually happens. A book is learning. So is an audiobook, a recipe, a garden bed, a broken thing your child fixed and figured out.
What counts for your state's requirements is a different question. And the answer depends on where you live. Most states care that you're covering certain subject areas, not how you cover them. A documentary is science. A historical site visit is social studies.
The Capture feature in grovio is built for exactly these moments: the learning that happens outside a formal lesson. A photo, a short note, and it's part of your portfolio. And when someone asks what your child has been doing, a grandparent, an evaluator, a skeptical relative, you have something real to show them. Not a report card. An actual window into your child's days.
If your child learned something today — anything — that's a homeschool day.
🌱 Capture those moments in grovio — a photo, a short note — and when someone asks what your child has been doing, you'll have something real to show them.
Claire writes the grovio Guide. She owned and ran a Montessori preschool program and did graduate-level study in developmental psychology back when her own son was little — these days she's homeschooling that same son, raising another little one, and staying in the thick of it through her local co-op.
